Well here’s a surprise – the new 2019 Perodua Axia looks to be coming soon! A brochure has surfaced on social media, indicating that the national carmaker’s smallest, cheapest model will be getting some new features to go along with a visual update.
First things first, it’s confirmed that the Axia will not only get Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), but also Advanced Safety Assist 2.0 (ASA 2.0) with pedestrian detection. Variants GXtra (a new mid-range trim level) and above will be fitted with VSC, while ASA 2.0 will be offered on the range-topping Advance. As before, the base E will come without ABS, which will only be available from the higher-spec G onwards.
Based on the near-identical silhouette to the outgoing car, the new Axia will be more of a heavy facelift than an all-new model, and it sports the same 260 litre boot. Perodua has previously said it cannot install VSC on existing models that were not designed for it, so clearly the company has managed to work around it. Given that there’s no mention of airbags anywhere, however, the airbag count will likely remain at two.
Onwards to the specs. The E will remain the cheapest car you can buy in Malaysia, and it comes with none of the features listed – not even a head unit or speakers. It will also be the only variant to come with a five-speed manual gearbox (and only as a manual), with the G now only available with a four-speed automatic.
The G gains two speakers and 14-inch alloys, but the anti-snatch hook will be removed, it seems. That will be reserved for the GXtra, which also gets front and rear parking sensors, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, powered side mirrors and four speakers. The SE model gain a chrome grille, front and side skirts, keyless entry and tinted windows, while the Advance throws in a reverse camera (and likely a touchscreen head unit).
The facelift also sees the introduction of a new Style variant, slotting between the GXtra and SE models. This will be the only model to get unique front and rear bumpers (unlike the outgoing models, the SE and Advance model will revert to the standard bumpers), along with larger 15-inch alloys. No ASA 2.0 on this one, thought.
